Chemical Compatibility Guide: Selecting Cartridge Housings for Solvents and Acids

Filtering volatile solvents, concentrated acids, and aggressive bases requires strict attention to material compatibility. Choosing the wrong vessel alloy, plastic resin, or elastomeric seal can lead to chemical degradation, hazardous leaks, and total operational failure.

Material Selection Matrix for Chemical Filtration

  • Stainless Steel 316L: Excellent for organic solvents, alcohols, fuel additives, and high-temperature mild acids.

  • UPVC / Polypropylene (PP): Ideal for highly corrosive inorganic acids (like hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid) and alkaline solutions where metals pit or oxidize.

  • PTFE & PVDF: Highly inert materials suited for ultra-pure chemicals, aggressive oxidizers, and semiconductor-grade reagents.

Critical Seal & O-Ring Considerations

The vessel body isn't the only component exposed to aggressive fluids—elastomeric seals must also withstand chemical attack:

  • EPR / EPDM: Best for ketones, aldehydes, and hot water/steam applications; poor resistance to oils.

  • Viton (FKM): Excellent resistance to petroleum products, solvents, and mineral acids.

  • Kalrez / Encapsulated PTFE: Offers near-universal chemical immunity for critical zero-leak chemical applications.

Always verify full chemical compatibility charts at operating temperatures prior to installing new filter housings into hazardous process lines.
