How Liquid Coalescing Filters Improve Industrial Oil and Water Separation

Emulsified oil in water (or water suspended in hydrocarbons) presents a complex separation challenge that standard particle filters cannot solve. Liquid-Liquid Coalescing Filter Housings provide a mechanical solution to separate immiscible liquids without relying on settling tanks or chemical additives.

How Liquid Coalescing Works

  1. Interception & Capture: The feed mixture passes from the inside to the outside of a specialized gradient matrix coalescer cartridge.

  2. Droplet Growth: Microscopic dispersed droplets collide and fuse together within the fiber matrix, forming larger droplets.

  3. Gravity Separation: As the enlarge droplets exit the cartridge, the difference in specific gravity causes the heavier phase (water) to sink to the vessel sump while the lighter phase (oil) floats to the top discharge port.

Core Operational Advantages

  • High Separation Efficiency: Removes free and entrained water down to low parts-per-million (PPM) levels.

  • Continuous Process Flow: Replaces large, slow gravity settling tanks with a compact, inline pressurized vessel.

  • Protects Downstream Equipment: Prevents water-induced corrosion in fuel lines, turbines, and catalytic processing beds.

Common Industry Uses

  • Removal of water from diesel, jet fuel, and hydrocarbon feedstocks

  • Oil recovery from industrial wash water and machining coolants

  • Amine and glycol liquid treating loops in natural gas processing
